SET YOUR AFFECTION ON THINGS ABOVE - PART 1

Colossians 3:1 & 2

Jeremiah 29:11 & 13

Colossians 3:1 & 2

(V.1) If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of the Father.

(V.2) “Set your affection on things above not on things on the earth.”

  • What does it mean to set your affection on something?

The Definition of Affection: a feeling of liking and caring for someone or something

  • So now after hearing the definition of affection, What are some things we set our affection on, on a daily basis?

  • Ourselves, our jobs, things we own, and things we buy just to name a few.

  • Those are some examples so that we fully understand what it means to set our affection on something.

  • The scripture tells us that we must set our affection (our desires, our heart) on things above, set our affection on Christ and not on things on the earth.

What are the benefits of having your affection set above?

Benefit 1: Jeremiah 29:11 & 13

(V.11) “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

(V.13) “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” (Key words; all your heart)

Benefit number 1: Those who have their affection set above, will see the plans God has for them come to pass in their life.

Below is an illustration:

Michkael represents man, and Ayanis, represents God. Michkael has goals, he has things he wants to do in life, places he wants to go. There is a pack of chips on the floor under the chairs which represents the goal Michkael wants to attain. But Michkael has to lift several chairs to get to his goal. (the chips)

Zelda represents the voice of his emotions and his thoughts, while Michael represents Michkael’s family, friends, and people trying to influence his mindset.

His emotions and thoughts are speaking loud saying “Is that your goal? (Pack of chips) go for it! You don’t see anything in God’s hands, do you? So how can you trust that he has what you need; don’t waste your time setting your eyes only on God, you can’t even be sure that he’ll give it to you.

Meanwhile family and friends are asking, church again?! You’re always going to church, you should be working hard trying to full fill your dreams, is all this church even WORTH IT?

So he’s following the voices of the flesh and listening to what they’re saying. He’s laboring and sweating just to get ONE bag of chips.

To be continued tomorrow...

PRAYER:

“Father God, I set my affection on things above;

On Christ, seated at the right hand of the Father,

I remove it from tv, from myself, dreams, plans, and my ambitions

I set my affection on the plans Christ has for me.”
